Day 32 - Getting a serious 'Thumb' Workout today...you may laugh.... 01/26/2012

Some times you must admit...you are not ready...

Yesterday I received a much needed lesson in dismantling, 'lightening' and reassembling my Ruger Vaquero Pistols. I love these guns. They closely resemble those of the Wild West in the 1800's and are incredibly durable and easy to use.

However, I realized last night that I am no where near ready to disassemble my guns myself! These things are not as simple as the 'exploded view' in the manual would have you believe! Thank goodness I have State Champions; Ragtime Kid and Carolina Rose as my neighbours! Until I'm fully versed in gunsmithing...i'll be leaving any work to the expert hands of Ragtime...

So today's rest day will be spent 'building my cocking thumb'. Only another gun enthusiast can say that and not giggle like a child. Surprisingly enough, the thumb, hand and forearm strength required for fast and accurate shooting requires quite the rigid practice schedule. With that in mind I've been 'dry firing' as often as possible, slowly building muscle memory to improve my time and control.

THIS IS SOME SERIOUS FUN!!!

Day 32 - Fitting it all in, life, kids, workout, healthy eating...how do you do it?... 01/25/2012

Who doesn't LOVE their crockpot?

Picture
I do..

Moms do....

People who wants a to come home to the smell of an amazing meal..they do

Anyone who wants to eat well and has about 10 minutes to squeeze in prep, serve, consume, clean up...all after work while doing laundry, walking the dog and mowing the lawn...those people do...

While I'm mastering my Four Hour Work Week and making my schedule work for me, I'm bringing out my old pal: The CrockPot. A trusty household helper.

Last night I made breakfast in it, waking up to the smell of French Toast Bread Pudding, a perfect start to the day for the kids and a HUGE time saver for me. There's also oodles of leftovers that served as a good snack after school and will probably appear as breakfast again tomorrow. Everyone should own a Crockpot! Not just for meals but mulled wine, spiced cider, I even use one in my treatment room to keep my facial towels warm!

So today was a busy one, typical family day: Wake up, work out, shower, get everyone ready, dishes, breakfast, more dishes, pack the lunch I forgot to make last night, brush everyones teeth when 2 of those people are moving targets..get one to school by 8, one by 8.30, head to work, work, pick up 2nd born, meet bus for #1 Son, homework, breathe ( first time all day!.) Play, dinner prep, clean up, showers, show, book, bed, laundry, breathe again...read, sleep.....yep, a Standard American Day...

Day 31 - Keep taking your vitamins! 01/24/2012

Striving for 5 is not just about eating right for your health, it's also of great importance for maintaining youth and beauty. Insufficient key vitamins and minerals can play havoc with your skin, leading to premature aging, acne, early sagging of the skin, a dull, lack-lustre complexion and more wrinkles than you've really earned!

In the treatment room, we use a variety of antioxidant packed serums and creams, coupled with the latest modalities to ensure maximum delivery and efficacy within the skin. Anti-aging beauty products can go a long way in helping to improve the appearance of your skin, but only a good nutritional foundation can give you a truly radiant complexion and healthy nails and hair. The main contributor to a youthful appearance...is YOU!

What you eat, what you do, how you manage stress, if you exercise, HOW you exercise, do you wear SPF or practice 'safe sun'?

Eating well and taking a good multi-vitamin are easy ways to give your body and your face a huge 'youth' boost!
Picture
The most significant supplements for a bright complexion include vitamins A (for cellular turnover), B (for moisture), C (for sun protection and repair), E (for soothing), and K (for blood clotting and reduction in dark circles and scars).

If you're not into taking supplements it's worth keeping this info in mind so you can eat more foods that contain these nutrients. I take Vi-Pak, daily. It's broken up into 2 easy to use packets; orange = day, blue = night. Simple. The guesswork is taken out of the equation, everything contained is within these handy little packets, in doses best suited for my needs. It doesn't replace good nutrition, but it is an incredible boost that I often cannot fulfill with diet alone.

Today is a rest day...so I'm hanging with my littlest Mini Me and making the most of her great mood! You never can tell with a 2 year old!

Have a great day!

Day 26 - 30 - Adrenal Fatigue....what now??? 01/23/2012
0 Comments

If you haven't picked up Four Hour Workweek yet, you MUST! It's turning my world upside down and I love it! Practically every aspect of my daily life is getting an overhaul and wow..the difference is astounding! My stress alone has dropped to a level I haven't felt since way before I had my first child..Now THAT alone is worth the $25.99 for the book...
Picture
Speaking of stress levels, last year I had numerous blood tests done to compile of full map of my cortisol, hormone, minerals and vitamin levels. I hadn't been sleeping well and my heart was pounding at rest. Turns out my cortisol levels at night were off the charts, over 3 times the healthy amount. 3 times! Within that chapter of my life I was taking care of my 2 young kids alone, 5 days a week, no family even in the state.. trying to build a new business, managing 2 properties out of state and 8 tenants, 2 of whom were on the path to eviction, organizing a social club, about to separate from my husband of 12 years and living in a new town VERY much isolated from  friends and family. Of course my stresses are relative to my life but depression, I later discovered, is a natural result of 'Adrenal Fatigue' or HPA, a stress induced disfunction of the adrenal axis creating abnormal cortisol release patterns thus an important contributor to to psychosomatic symptoms and disease states.

No wonder Cortisol, with all of its incredible benefits, can be called the 'death hormone' when it's levels are way too high. When your adrenals are overworked, it sets off an inflammatory response in the body, absorbing the bodies natural 'youth hormone': DHEA. Adrenal Fatigue is quite difficult to diagnose, as you will see from the list below, so many symptoms can be associated with HPA that it is often mistook for something else.

Common Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue.

  • Cravings for sugar
  • Cravings for salt on food when you eat
  • Feel dehydrated and thirsty and require plenty of water
  • Difficulty falling asleep at night, sleep lightly or wake early or often
  • Difficulty relaxing, nervous, anxious or hyperactive
  • Often spacey, or foggy thinking, even memory loss
  • Lack willpower to accomplish
  • General exhaustion
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Low libido
  • Weight gain, especially in abdomen and waist area
  • Losing muscle tone
  • Sagging skin, dry, yellow or pale in color
  • Hair starting to gray, thin out and become dry
  • Lips losing their color
  • Loss of appetite
  • Anorexia
  • Weight loss
  • High blood sugar
Adrenal Fatigue can often be managed with the same healthy habits recommended to alleviate many other common ailments, ...reduction of stress, eating well, drinking lots of water, curbing alcohol, drugs, sweets and sugars, caffeine, and by maintaining ample physical exercise, good, healthy relationships and a positive outlook. Armed with this knowledge I am glad to report that my night time cortisol overload is now at an acceptable level...I no longer want to organize the nuts and bolts at 3am for example... :)

With that in mind, back to today's workout! I combined a much need hour of yoga with my pull up training today....

Day 25-26 - No rest for the wicked 01/18/2012
0 Comments

So after a 7 days juice intensive, all is well in the Verlangieri household. The Mini V's are back in school and happily climbing 'their' tree, as for myself, enter the 'Mom' schedule once more. Time management is a sport in my home, one that like any sport, requires lots and lots of practice. I'm by no means perfect, even with the piles and piles of articles, tips, books, and magazines I have read giving me advice on how to make everything fit into my day.

So with this addiction to time management once again drafting in after a much needed sick break, I've decided to heed the words of Tim Ferris, author of 'The Four Hour Workweek'. In his words.."Time management, forget about it"...ha! Yay! Does this mean I ditch all adult responsibility and go kayak till I find the end of the earth? No. Tim goes on, "you shouldn't be trying to do more in each day, trying to fill each second with a work fidget of some type". This book is an excellent read and there's so much more to this principle than I can even begin to cover - get it!

With this new 80/20 rule in mind (80% of the results come from 20% of the work)..time to maximize and minimize...Whoop! Watch out totally unnecessary

Day 14 - Everyone in my house 'got down with the sickness'...ugh 01/02/2012

Picture
Rest day. Yesterday was a struggle for me. With both of my kids sick, it took every 'old fashioned' remedy I could muster to ward off the 'lurgi'! My immunity goto: Green Goddess Juice. Its delicious, healthy and you can't help but feel energized and 'clean' after drinking it, it's packed with nutrients.

* 1 medium ripe pineapple
* 2 apples
* 1/2 lemon including its peel
* 1/2 lime including its peel
* 1 bag of organic spinach (approx. 200g)
* 5 sticks celery
* 1 whole cucumber including peel
* 1" slice of Ginger - Optional but amazing..

I'm a very big advocate of juicing especially when it comes to fighting colds and reducing acidity in the body.

Inflammation is THE fastest way to accelerate aging. don't be deceived into believing that inflammation comes hand in hand with redness or soreness. What you eat can have a profound affect on your skin, quality of sleep, energy levels, sex drive, mental clarity, it can even accelerate or slow down the visible signs of aging. Chronic inflammation can be caused by a number of things that one would not expect:

Stress
Diet
Physical activity
Food allergies
Environmental Toxicity

inflammation going on inside your body right now.
